As a humanist celebrant I’ve helped hundreds of families and couples do justice to the big occasions in life – birth, partnering and dying – what some call the “rites of passage”. I absolutely love my work because I know it can make a difference to people’s lives. I put my heart and soul into it and I get huge job satisfaction.

I met with a family yesterday to talk about the funeral of a much-loved husband and father who among many other things was an expert in the repair and maintenance of electric clocks. He also loved restoring old tools which he saw as things of great beauty. So much so that he displayed them at home on a shelf, like pieces of sculpture. His wife showed them to me, carefully maintained in full working order and he’s right they are beautiful. It’s such a privilege to do this work and try to see the world through other people’s eyes.
Really I am getting so hacked off with this problem which has persisted for years when some simple actions could make the process of getting legally married so much easier and with so much more choice for couples.
